William F. Crosswy Music Education Scholarship
Honoring a Legacy of Music and Inspiration: The William F. Crosswy Scholarship
In the late 1940s, William "Bill" Crosswy arrived in Paris, bringing with him a passion for music that would transform the lives of countless students in Henry County. For over two decades, until his untimely passing in June 1970, Bill dedicated himself to directing bands and choral groups, nurturing a thriving community of young musicians. By August 1965, his influence had grown to guide 250 school musicians, a testament to his remarkable leadership.
Beyond his musical talents, Bill was a visionary in education, serving as president of the Henry County Education Association. His outstanding community service was recognized in June 1964 with the Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award. Under his direction, the Grove High School Band earned the prestigious honor of marching in the 1966 Cherry Blossom Festival parade in Washington, D.C.—a moment of pride for the entire community. For years, Bill oversaw the World’s Biggest Fish Fry, ensuring visiting bands, judges, and his own junior high and senior high bands were prepared to shine. In 1971, the festival’s commemorative book was dedicated in his memory, a lasting tribute to his legacy. His dream culminated in August 1969 when he led the Henry County High School Band in its first rehearsal in the new school building, establishing a music department he had long envisioned.
Following his passing, a scholarship fund was established in his honor, with early recipients Mark Brown (1970) and R. Michael Holden (1971) benefiting from his enduring impact. Now, the Paris-Henry County Chamber Music Society is proud to revive and reimagine this cherished scholarship, ensuring it thrives as a perpetual gift for graduating seniors pursuing a college music major.
